Enrichment

Compass Maths is our extension Mathematics program at Kew East Primary School for Years 3-6. Students are carefully selected based on assessment data. The aim of this program is to group like ability students to learn together for 3 x 60-minute sessions each week. This provides students with opportunities to extend their understandings and explore mathematical concepts in a challenging environment.

Along with this, students will partake in learning tasks that aim to develop their problem-solving skills. During this component of the program, students will explore mathematical terminology, be taught flexible and efficient strategies for problem solving and be encouraged to use creativity and ingenuity.

During the school year, the Year 5/6 students will take part in The Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads while the 3/4 students will participate in The Australasian Problem Solving Math Games Competition. These contests focus on the students’ ability to solve mathematical problems creatively as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method. There are five official contests throughout the year.

Victorian High-Ability Program

The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) is a Department of Education enrichment program that provides opportunities for high-ability students to engage with challenging material in either English or Mathematics. Multiple intakes will run throughout the year and will go for ten weeks. Students are selected by the Department of Education based on their NAPLAN and Victorian Curriculum Progression Point data.
