Band Program

In the second semester of Year 3, students are able to engage in learning a band instrument in small group tutorials. At the commencement of Year 4, when students have gained some proficiency, they join together to form the Social Band – a training band that further develops ensemble skills and music appreciation. During the year, students begin to experience public performances at school assemblies as well as the end-of-year concert, the Soiree.

Upon gaining the required skills, students can join the Concert Band. In this band, students have opportunities to extend their learning and performance experiences by attending external performances such as the Victorian School Music Festival, where they observe other student bands and perform themselves.

Students are treated to onstage tutorials by leading conductors and music educators and receive written feedback to help improve their musicality. Beginning Band students may select from Trumpet, Trombone, Flute, Clarinet, and Percussion. Interested students may have the opportunity to move to Saxophones, Bass Clarinets, Euphoniums (small tubas), and Tuba in Concert Band. The Kew East Band program has been operating since the 1930s and is renowned throughout the community.
